How is EL different to ELSA?
ELSA is a common intervention used in schools and has its purpose and benefits. However, if ELSA has not worked for a young person, or further support is still needed, EL is a powerful tool for all to learn.
Aspect | ELSA Programme | Emotional Logic Method |
---|---|---|
Purpose | Supports emotional literacy and regulation | Helps individuals adapt to emotional loss and reclaim personal values |
Audience | Children in schools (age 4–18) | Children, teens, and adults |
Anger Perspective | An emotion to be understood, labelled, and calmed | Emotion is harnessed as energy to bargain back what was lost |
Emotional Focus | Recognition, expression, and regulation | Understanding emotional cycle and constructive change |
Session Style | Weekly 1:1 or small group sessions | Flexible, reflective sessions using kinaesthetic resources and value-based planning |
Delivery Method | Trained Teaching Assistants under supervision of Educational Psychologists | Certified Emotional Logic practitioners or trained facilitators |
Outcome Goals | Emotional vocabulary, self-esteem, and social skills | Emotional resilience, empowerment, and restoration of personal values |
Philosophical Basis | Child development psychology and emotional literacy | Grief theory, emotional adaptation, and values-based psychology |
View of Emotion | Discusses emotions as being negative | Teaches all emotions have a useful purpose |
“EL has an impact on the whole school community and can be learnt by all.”
