How is EL different to CBT?

“Emotional Logic untangles the inner half of life that CBT does not reach.”

“Emotional Logic heals the broken heart behind mental illness.”

Trisha Horgan, Senior Mental Health Nurse

CBT is a well-respected and useful therapy, but how is it different to CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a well-respected therapy for individuals who have repetitive self-critical thoughts that lead to anxiety or depression.

Emotional Logic is not a therapy. It is personal development by feedback learning how to make sense of unpleasant emotions that, if misunderstood, could escalate into common mental illnesses, isolation and/or disruptive behaviour.

CBT identifies unhelpful habits of thinking, and then teaches behavioural methods to break those habits and make them less disabling. Emotion is
seen mostly as a side effect of thinking (an epi-phenomenon), which will spontaneously improve when the unhelpful cognitive habit is broken.
Successful cognitive therapy enables people to achieve behavioural targets without intrusive thoughts.

Emotional Logic tools identify habits of emotional processing as patterns of emotional overlay behind decision-making. All our unpleasant emotions have useful informational purposes to activate a heathy adjustment process that we can harness to manage change. The ‘Emotional Logic method’ is feedback learning that reframes emotional responses around our personal values, improving choices of behaviour for survival and thriving in relational systems.
